Period Talk Uganda partnered with EcoWarriors Initiatives Uganda to launch the Kick Out Period Poverty Campaign in Budondo, bringing together students from several schools, teachers, community members and local leaders to address period poverty through education, sustainable menstrual solutions and community engagement.

The campaign responded to the realities faced by many girls in the community, where some had resorted to using soil, polythene bags and pieces of old mattresses as alternatives to menstrual products due to limited access to safe and affordable menstrual care.

The launch featured menstrual health and hygiene education, alongside the distribution of 800 reusable menstrual pads, ensuring that girls received both the knowledge and sustainable menstrual products needed to manage menstruation safely, confidently and with dignity.

Recognising that ending period poverty requires the involvement of the entire community, the event also featured a community football match, using sport as an innovative platform to engage men and boys as allies in advancing menstrual equity. The campaign was further strengthened by the participation of Uganda Cranes footballer Denis Omedi, who served as the campaign’s Goodwill Ambassador, encouraging communities to support girls’ education, menstrual dignity and the fight against period poverty.

As the first activity under the Kick Out Period Poverty Campaign, the Budondo launch demonstrated the power of partnership and community-led action in creating lasting change, laying the foundation for an initiative committed to ensuring that menstruation is never a barrier to education, dignity or opportunity
