Period Talk Uganda partnered with Sunny Smiles Initiative to respond to period poverty in Budondo, following reports that some girls had resorted to using unsafe menstrual materials due to limited access to affordable menstrual products.
The outreach created a safe and supportive environment where participants received menstrual and reproductive health education, helping to improve knowledge, challenge harmful myths and encourage healthy menstrual practices. Open discussions also provided an opportunity for girls to ask questions and gain confidence in managing their menstrual health with dignity.
As part of the initiative, participants received skills training in reusable menstrual pad making, equipping them with practical knowledge to produce sustainable menstrual products and reduce long-term dependence on disposable alternatives. The outreach also included the distribution of reusable menstrual pads, ensuring that girls had immediate access to safe menstrual products while learning sustainable solutions for the future.
By combining education, practical skills and menstrual product distribution, the partnership demonstrated the value of community led action in addressing period poverty and empowering girls with the knowledge and resources needed to stay healthy, remain in school and manage menstruation with confidence.
